Sheffield: UK Outdoor Capital City
While it may be something that most Sheffielder’s would agree on, it seems to be something that stands up to a bit of academic rigour too! This is a great bit of news for the city to finally see the council appreciating and promoting Sheffield as the outdoor Capital.
More from the official report….
Now a new study, the Outdoor Economy Report carried out by the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University, has revealed that the city has the highest household spend on outdoor equipment in the country, high participation rates in outdoor recreation and more than 200 outdoor businesses.
The findings come as the city’s reputation as a centre for outdoor adventure has helped to secure two high-profile events with the European Outdoor Summit (EOS) and the International Adventure Tourism Conference, both set to take place in 2015.
This evidence has led to Sheffield claiming the title
Outdoor Capital City of the UK.
Sheffield City Council is now setting up a joint venture with key partners such as the National Trust to develop an Outdoor Economy Strategy for the city. The strategy will be launched at next year’s European Outdoor Summit and will seek to establish Sheffield’s outdoor assets as a key part of the city’s identity and maximise economic potential.
