Ride Sheffield Winter Social 2019: 10 year special!

This year’s Winter Social on the 25th of November is a bit of a special one, as we are celebrating our 10th Birthday! Yes, time flies when you are having fun on your bikes and riding in Sheffield can certainly be as fun as it gets! But what’s almost as good fun as riding your bikes is hanging out with your mates over a beer and chatting about bikes and good times. Add in some top-notch entertainment from the Shred Talk hosted by Downtime Podcast, some excellent prizes to be won in the quiz and the raffle, a little bit of merch from ourselves and Bolehills and some of Sheffield finest brands showing of their good too.
A lot has happened in the past 10 years and we may have to toast a couple of our successes and just what an awesome place Sheffield is to ride a mountain bike. We will also be updating you on some of our key projects such as Redmires and Cut Gate and other exciting developments in the city, as well as looking forward at how we (and you) would like to see Ride Sheffield developing in the next 10 years. Finally, we will then give you a quick update on what we have done with Rad Tax this year, quickly rattle through our AGM and then we will be moving on to the more entertaining aspects of the evening….
SHRED Talk with Downtime Podcast

Last year we invited a handful of local riders, racers and industry types to have a light-hearted and freewheeling chat about the future of mountain biking. Imagine a Ted talk on mountain biking. This year we are focussing on Performance and have an amazing panel that will be sharing their wisdom with you. From new riders, to hardcore racers, we all benefit from upping our performance.
Even better, Chris from the Downtime Podcast will be hosting the chat and getting the most our of our guests. If time allows, we will hopefully have a short Q+A at the end too
So who have we got to chat to us?

Adela Carter – Boss Lady to a select few, AC to most; I’ve been working in and around mountain biking for about 8 years and in sport in general for a lot longer. In “physical preparation” is where my job title usually sits, but I’m increasingly aware performance emerges from all of the nooks and crannies between physical, psychological, technical, tactical and social aspects. Two mantras to dwell upon… Having fun is a serious business. Never trust someone who speaks in absolutes
Tom Duncan – Tom is a mechanic from Sheffield, in the last 8 years he has wrenched at World cups and EWS races across the world including 3 seasons with the Santa Cruz Syndicate for Steve Peat. Tom has also been a part of the development process of several bikes, most recently with the Cannondale DH prototype in the 2019 season
Annie Last – Annie needs very little introduction; Olympian, Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, World Cup winner and multiple podiums at World Cups and World Championships.
Currently racing for KMC-Ekoï- Orbea, next year is looking like a big year for Annie
Rich Follett – Rich runs Fit4-Physio – a physiotherapy and sports injury clinic in Sheffield. He worked for the English Institute of Sport for many years with multiple elite athletes from a wide variety of sports. In the pre Rio Olympic cycle and at the Rio Olympic Games themselves he worked with the British Triathlon Team helping them to achieve a medal haul of 3 from a possible 6 medals
Dr. Rob Copeland – Rob is Professor of Physical Activity and Health at Sheffield Hallam University and a Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. He moved to Sheffield in 1998 and has fallen in love with the city ever since. Rob is currently the Director of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University, which focuses on the prevention and treatment of non-communicable disease through physical activity. In other areas, Rob has worked as a psychologist within a wide range of professional sports including cycling, golf, football, tennis and snooker. Rob has also worked with chief executives and senior manager’s applying sports psychology techniques to a business environment to improve performance under pressure. Rob spends his ‘free’ time with his family (his dog) but mostly just riding his bike.
Lucy Follett – Lucy has worked for the English Institute of Sport across a spectrum of Olympic and Paralympic sports for the last 10 years. For the London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Olympic cycles she provided Physiotherapy support to Diving, Triathlon and Speed Skating athletes at home and at competition abroad. Over the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 cycles Lucy has worked across numerous different athlete heath related performance innovation projects across multiple sports. This has including managing saddle related issues.
Chris Hall – Downtime Podcast – a weekly dose of the most in-depth downhill and enduro mountain bike content available. Chatting to riders, coaches, mechanics, engineers, brands and more, to help you find out more about the sport that you love

Social Ride

Lastly, or firstly! We will also be having a social ride in the afternoon before the Social, for those who want to make more of a day of it.
We will be meeting at the Norfolk Arms at 1300 for a 1330 start and will be planning to ride for a couple of hours at a pretty social pace.
This is a social ride, not a guided ride so please make sure that you come prepared.
