It’s not just us that are out on the trails so its worth bearing in mind the best way to act around other users; while most walkers can be dealt with by smiling and being polite, encountering horses does requite a little more thought. A while back we got together with Hallam Riders Group to discuss how best to improve relations between mountain bikers and horse riders out on the trails and came up with a few hints and tips for those horsey encounters.

Temporary Bridleway Closure
For almost a year now you have been able to use a couple of new Bridleways on Longshaw, which have provided excellent links to the new routes across Froggat and Curbar. Lady Cannings Update May 2015
More than a few weeks radio silence on Lady Cannings again, for which I can only apologise. A couple of bumps in the road towards getting the trails built, plus most people involved also working towards putting Steel City DH has meant another small delay.
Current status is that the trail is planned and marked on the ground, and Sheffield City Council (SCC) planning permission has been granted. The machines were due to go on site in mid-April, but unfortunately right at the last the Peak District National Park Authority added their own planning consultation on top. It’s pretty frustrating given that they’ve known about this for a long while, but by the same token no one has built a purpose built MTB trail in the Park before so we are also breaking new ground both physically and metaphorically. This additional process resulted in there needing to be some more extensive archaeological assessments done (on top of what Sheffield City Council had already commissioned), but the mighty Jon Dallow of SCC Woodlands has got the work sorted and had a positive meeting with the Peak Park. All of us at Ride Sheffield can’t stress enough what a legend Jon has been in steering this project through all the approvals processes.
The upshot is that we do actually have a firm dates for works commencing, with Biketrack heading into the woods on 18th May for about 4 weeks. We’re aiming to open in early July depending on the weather. As any of you who have followed the Steel City track upgrade and Bolehills renovations will know, surfacing needs time to bed in and harden, particularly if wet, so let’s see what the weather brings us in June. Other good news is that Jordan Gould of Biketrack has said that he’s especially positive having seen how well the work at Greno went, given that the on site materials to be used are so similar, so that’s great.
So once again, we beg your patience just a short while longer. Massive thanks to Jon Dallow, Jordan Gould and to our ever generous sponsor Go Outdoors for all being so helpful and understanding in getting through to the build.
One last thing; we’re going to hold a big thank you/opening party for everyone who’s funded the trail in early July. Keep an eye out for a firm date announcement as soon as we have a good idea what’s happening with the build.

Trail Closures in Greno Woods
Four years ago when the Steel City track was built in Greno woods we could not have imagined how popular it would prove to be, but that popularity has brought with it a fair amount of wear and tear. So even after the repairs made by trail builders Bike Track and lots of great work done by our volunteers over the years, it has come time to give the track a bit of a facelift. (more…) -

Lady Canning’s Trails Project: Crowd Funding Success leads to partnership with Go Outdoors
Launched last spring, Ride Sheffield’s Crowd Sourced funding for the development of trails in Lady Canning’s Plantation was rapidly taken to the hearts and wallets of local (and countrywide) riders. With donations ranging from grom’s pocket money, through to university and local cycling clubs collecting money together, to larger donations from local industry and topped up with t-shirt sales supported by local bike shops. The funding slowly but surely made its way up to the amount needed to start construction of the first stage of the trails. There has been a phenomenal amount of support for the project and it is a huge thanks to all those who have donated that we are in the position we are in today. (more…) -
Trail Maintainence Days in Greno
Now that the trails are drying out after a long wet winter, it’s time to get out and give them a little tlc and get them running sweet for the rest of the year.We are going to start our program of trail work up in Greno, but we will also be doing some trail days on the Eastern Moors and Blacka as well as helping prep the ground up in Lady Canning’s too (but more on that another time).

Curbar/Froggatt Bridleway Nears Completion….
After a couple of years hard work by the Eastern Moors Partnership (EMP), the plan to create a new bridleway running the full length of Froggatt and Curbar edges is nearing fruition. All the necessary permissions are in place and it’s hoped that signage and gates can be installed ready for the trail to open in April. (more…) -
Greno: Sign of the times
Greno Woods has been one of Ride Sheffield’s projects since the very early days of the group. Some of you will have been there at the very start when quite a large bunch of us took the Wildlife Trust for a ride round the woods as part of their Stakeholder Meetings.Since then quite a lot has changed in the woods. From the inaugural Peaty’s Steel City Downhill, to an initial proposal that you can still read here through the building of the Steel City Track and changes made to the other tracks to the point where we now have the mountain bike routes signposted and signage on the other trails allowing you to make a loop of it if you wish.

When is it too wet to ride?
Inspired by Vertebrate Graphics excellent idea to publish a weather proof route, in order to encourage riders to think a little more about where they are riding when the conditions are poor. But it also raised the question “when is a trail too wet to ride?”Here is VG’s take on things….
Like the rest of the country, the Peak has taken a pounding thanks to this wet and mild weather, and unfortunately many of the area’s bridleways and byways are suffering more than they usually would in a typical winter. (more…)
