  • Lady Cannings Trail Evening

cannings 1We will be heading up to Lady Cannings tomorrow evening (Monday 20th June) to carry out a little bit of routine maintenance, open up a couple of the full drains and cute back the overhanging branches.

Its all pretty straightforward, low key work, but all help is appreciated, we will be meeting in the car park at 6pm and will be up there for 2-3 hrs before going for a quick pint in the Norfolk Arms. We will be bringing tools, but if you have a spade or a wheelbarrow, it would be worth bringing one along. You may also want to stick some midge repellant in your bag too!

This also means that the trail will be closed from 6pm onwards tomorrow night

  • June’s Trail Day – Blacka

2011 Oct 01 014editThis month for our trail day we will be teaming up with Sheffield Wildlife Trust to help with some of their work on Blacka.

We may also have a couple of impromptu evening trails sessions, which we will post up on the Facebook.

    Full details below….

The next volunteer work day is on Saturday 4th June and we will be installing some of the new Finger and Waymarker posts and carrying out some maintenance work on the cross drains on the Bridleway going down to Strawberry Lee Lane car park.

We will bring gloves, tools and refreshments as usual but please remember to wear rough clothes, sturdy footwear and bring waterproofs, sun cream, lunch and water. I’ve haven’t spotted any midges yet but you might want to bring some repellent just in case.

I will be running the session so please can you meet me at in the usual place, Stony Ridge Car Park car park (SK 29581 80251) at 10am. Please ring me on 07964745451 if you arrive after 10am and need to find me.

    Thanks Hannah

Please not that we will not be providing lunch for this one. But please email us if you attend so we can update the incentive  scheme, as a lot of people have been to quite a few days so far!

1425561_1075049859219396_3390651349864147097_nYou may have been thinking that you have missed your chance to race at Peaty’s Steel City DH for another year. With some categories oversubscribed by four times the amount of places that were available you would be pretty lucky to get into the event. But this year we are able to offer three people the chance to get a place in the race after the ballot.  (more…)

  • April Trail Days – Greno

DSC_0173For this months trail days we will be doing things a little differently. Now that everywhere is drying out nicely, we can turn our attention to fine tuning! To make sure that the trails in Greno are running sweetly for Peaty’s Steel City DH, we will be holding a couple of evening trail sessions.

We will be up on the trail on April the 4th and 11th and will aim to start at 5.30pm and work for a couple of hours or until the light fades. We will meet in the car park, but will be easy to find on the trail for those who cannot get up there until later. We will work predominantly on the Steel City track, but may do a little on the other ones if time allows. (more…)

  • March Trail Day – Lady Cannings

cannings 1This months trail day will be in Lady Cannings on Sunday the 6th of March. After the temporary closures of the trail because of the logging work and then due to the record levels of rain this winter, we are just about ready to re open the trail. All that is needed is to give the trail a bit of a tidy up and it will be ready to go. So on Sunday we will be after people to come along and move the logs off the trail, clear up the windblown debris and to make sure the trail corridor is still looking good and then it will be all sweet and ready to take riders again.

The trail will be formally checked on Monday, so please do not ride it until Monday evening. But beyond that enjoy getting reacquainted.  (more…)

  • Managing Public Rights of Way for Quality Mountain Biker Experiences

Last November we put out a shout for local rider, racer and all round good sort Emma Peasland who was writing her dissertation for the MSc Environmental Management course at Sheffield Hallam University. She got a pretty impressive response and lots of people attended her thought-provoking workshops.

It also generated her a huge amount information which she had the pleasure of ploughing through while the rest of us were enjoying festive rides and ploughing through turkey and christmas pudding!

But now the work is all done and she has more time to ride her bike, bask in the glory of a job well done (It got a very good mark!) and also give us a chance to see her findings. So in here it is in her own words…… (more…)

  • Lady Cannings Latest

IMG_5647 3Its been a tough first year for Blue Steel, Lady Canning’s first trail. After a cracking start of warm summer nights and multiple laps in a lush (and midge filled wood) followed by crisp and dry night laps, or as a nice dry option as the winter crept onwards. Or even just a chance to find (and refine) your flow.

But after being hit by trees felled in the wrong direction, the trail opened for another month before the onslaught of the wettest winter on record, that raised the water table to a level where we ended up with a couple of springs in the trail, meaning that we had to ultimately close it to preserve the trail and for rider safety. • February Trail Day – Greno Woods

Greno3This months trail day will be in Greno Woods on Saturday the 6th. While most of the trails are running pretty well at the moment, there are a few areas that could do with a little tlc to improve drainage etc. We are still waiting on the contractors who did the felling to tidy up the last bit of their work, but as it is too wet for machinery to go in there currently we are just going to have to wait. So there may well be another Greno Trail Day soon. As well as a couple of evening in the run up to the soon to be announced Peaty’s Steel City DH. (more…)

  • Lady Cannings Update

12553006_10156382397945058_8900002715802617600_nLast Friday on a beautifully sunny lunch break, we took a trip up to Lady Cannings for a quick catch up with Bike Track and Jon Dallow.

The first bit of business was to look at the existing track and to see how it was doing. You’ll be please to know that the majority of the track was looking pretty fine in the winter sun. However the handful of spots that had springs in were still a little soft, but an improvement on last week and after a dry few day should be even better now. As well as quick wander of the trail, Bike Track walked us through the new start, which looks great (the newly vented woods might even be a bit easier on the midges in the summer too!) (more…)

  • January Trail Day

P1000024With the wettest month on record now behind us, we thought it would be good to get out and give the trails a little tlc. Our work this month is pretty much dictated by the weather, as we are wing for the ground to settle before the contractors can neater up the work in Greno and in Lady Cannings we are waiting for the water table to drop as well as the new start to be constructed. So we will see work up at Greno in the next couple of months. (more…)
