Lady Cannings – Opens Tuesday!

funded this way – is built and nearly ready for riding. A HUGE
thankyou to all of you who dug deep and handed over some cash for the
trail. The crowd funding element raised OVER FIFTEEN THOUSAND POUNDS

Safer Cycling Around Horses
It’s not just us that are out on the trails so its worth bearing in mind the best way to act around other users; while most walkers can be dealt with by smiling and being polite, encountering horses does requite a little more thought. A while back we got together with Hallam Riders Group to discuss how best to improve relations between mountain bikers and horse riders out on the trails and came up with a few hints and tips for those horsey encounters.

Giving a Little Bit Back – The Stanage Sticker
Ride Sheffield have been heavily involved over the last few years in the Stanage Forum Steering group which helps the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) to manage Stanage North Lees Estate. In common with the rest of the public sector, the PDNPA has seen its central government grant cut by nearly 40% in the last few years. Inevitably, this has forced the authority to rethink how it funds the management of crucial landscape such as Stanage and the surrounding moors. (more…) -
Lady Cannings Update May 2015
More than a few weeks radio silence on Lady Cannings again, for which I can only apologise. A couple of bumps in the road towards getting the trails built, plus most people involved also working towards putting Steel City DH has meant another small delay.
Current status is that the trail is planned and marked on the ground, and Sheffield City Council (SCC) planning permission has been granted. The machines were due to go on site in mid-April, but unfortunately right at the last the Peak District National Park Authority added their own planning consultation on top. It’s pretty frustrating given that they’ve known about this for a long while, but by the same token no one has built a purpose built MTB trail in the Park before so we are also breaking new ground both physically and metaphorically. This additional process resulted in there needing to be some more extensive archaeological assessments done (on top of what Sheffield City Council had already commissioned), but the mighty Jon Dallow of SCC Woodlands has got the work sorted and had a positive meeting with the Peak Park. All of us at Ride Sheffield can’t stress enough what a legend Jon has been in steering this project through all the approvals processes.
The upshot is that we do actually have a firm dates for works commencing, with Biketrack heading into the woods on 18th May for about 4 weeks. We’re aiming to open in early July depending on the weather. As any of you who have followed the Steel City track upgrade and Bolehills renovations will know, surfacing needs time to bed in and harden, particularly if wet, so let’s see what the weather brings us in June. Other good news is that Jordan Gould of Biketrack has said that he’s especially positive having seen how well the work at Greno went, given that the on site materials to be used are so similar, so that’s great.
So once again, we beg your patience just a short while longer. Massive thanks to Jon Dallow, Jordan Gould and to our ever generous sponsor Go Outdoors for all being so helpful and understanding in getting through to the build.
One last thing; we’re going to hold a big thank you/opening party for everyone who’s funded the trail in early July. Keep an eye out for a firm date announcement as soon as we have a good idea what’s happening with the build.

Bolehills 2015 track update
Bolehills, Shefifeld’s finest BMX track, has been the focus of some serious digging over the past months with many volunteers grafting hard for hours, with help from the team at Biketrack.org, to reclaim the track from the undergrowth, add width and fine tune the line.
The surface is down and it’s nearly ready to ride but the track is currently CLOSED – it needs to settle, so please respect the work, spread the word and hang tight – it’ll be worth it for a summer of love at the ‘hills!

Greno Trails are officially open
After a lot of hard work over the past month all the trails in Greno woods are open and ready to ride. It has been a big job by local trail builders to get the three tracks back up to standard. All work that has been done is funded by Peaty’s Steel City DH and coordinated by us.All the trails are surfaced with local material (everything used comes from the woods) and is the same as has been used in previous digs. While some sections of the track look a little smoother than before (when compared to just before they were closed), they are the same as when they were originally built and are now built to last. They will also rough up with time!

Bolehills Resurfacing
The bulk of the work has now been done at Bolehills, so now it is time to put the finishing touches in place. Some of this is going to be done by machines and directed by Biketrack, but there is still al lot of volunteer work to be done.
