  • January Trail Day: Fox Hagg – New Date

    Our first trail day of the year will  be on Fox Hagg this coming Saturday the 26th of January.

    We will be meeting in the carpark by Rivelin Dams at 10 am and will be out on the trails for approximately 2-3 hrs. The trails are running pretty well, but we want to make sure they are ready for the full onslaught of winter kick is. We will be un-blocking drainage and making sure that the water stays off the trails

    We will provide lunch and snacks to keep your energy levels well stocked up provided by our trail day sponsors Bike-Track

    • Pleas dress appropriately for the work (especially if in fancy dress), stout boots and warm clothes recommend)

  • December Trail Day: Cannings Christmas Special

    Well its our last trail day of the year and we thought it would be a good idea to have a festive special up in Lady Cannings this coming Saturday the 8th of December.

    We will be meeting in the carpark on SheepHill Road at 10 am and will be out on the trails for approximately 2-3 hrs. The trails are running pretty well, but we want to make sure they are ready for the full onslaught of winter kick is. We will be clearing leaf litter, un-blocking drainage, patching the trail and promoting the flow on both trails.

    As its Christmas, we will have some delicious mince piece to keep your energy levels well stocked up and our trail day sponsors Bike-Track have kindly agreed to buy you all a mulled wine or a pint (or whatever is your preference) in the Norfolk Arms after the work is completed. (more…)

  • Winter Social – 26th November 2018

    The Winter Social has long been a part of the fabric of Ride Sheffield, it’s a great chance for us to tell you what we have been up-to and what we have planned for the coming year and more importantly, getting your thoughts and feedback on the direction we should be going in. But is also a good opportunity to catch up with friends, have a couple of beers and chat bikes, not to mention win great prizes in the quiz and raffle too.

    This year will be our 9th winter social (maybe we need a big party for our 10th birthday next year) and we have been trying to keep things fresh and interesting for you, to make it as enjoyable as possible. So what can you expect this year….? (more…)

  • November Trail Day – Blacka

    Blacka has always been a bit of a November favourite for us, it’s always good to get the trails ready for the winter so they give us some more sustainable riding in the winter and come out looking and riding sweetly in the spring.

    Our volunteers have been out on a few midweek sessions recently (give us an email if you fancy being part of the midweek crew), but there’s still lots to do up there.

  • June Trail Evening: Lady Cannings – 26/06/2018

    After a little break from our weekend trails day because, well its been rather dry and the trails are in great shape, which means more riding and less trail work.

    But after a bit of a late start this year the vegetation has started to grow back a little, making some stretched of Lady Cannings delightful singletrack a little too narrow and single. So its time for a bit of a trim not to mention al bit of general TLC.

    We will up at Lady Cannings on Tuesday the 26th of June, meeting in the car park at 6pm and carrying on until about 9 ish, followed by refreshments in the Norfolk arms afterwards. Hopefully we will be rewarded with a beautiful midsummers evening and enough of a breeze to keep the midges at bay! (more…)

  • March Trail Day and BBQ: Lady Canning

    It’s been great to give Lady Cannings trails a break over the past couple of weeks. It gives them time to rest and recover. Not to mention making it easy to do a little bit of trail work here and there. But nothing beats the solid effort of a trail day.

    This time as a little extra thank you to all our diggers/pruners/scrapers/rakers we will be having a bbq to round out the session and to celebrate the start of British Summertime!

    We will be heading upto Lady Cannings from 1300 onwards and will be eating about 1600.

    We will meet at the car park at 1300 and then after that on the trails (Blue Steel and CoG – the plan is to split into two teams). We will provide tools, but feel free to bring extras (barrows are particularly useful).

    While there will be food, you might want to bring water with you. Also please dress appropriately for the work.

    All help is greatly appreciated. See you Saturday!

    Please bear in mind that the trails will remain closed while we do the work and we will then review the closure after the work has been done and related to the weather forecast.

  • Lady Cannings Closures

    In discussion with Sheffield City Council we are aware the trails at Lady Cannings are have had a tough wet and soggy winter, not to mention a lot of snow and frozen weather and the unseasonably big thaw that followed last week and then the near flooding we have had today and forecast for more….
     
    For this reason there will be a short term annual closure of both Blue Steel and Cooking on Gas Trails within Lady Cannings over the next few weeks to reduce impact and keep the trails sustainable.
    Therefore the trails will be closed until the 25th of March (we will review at this point)

  • Trail Builders Wanted for Research Project

    Mountain biking differs in lots of way to many sports, one of which is our ability to sculpt our playground to create places to ride that compliment the rights of way that give us access to swathes of the countryside.

    For some, building trails gives us a deeper connection with the dirt, a better understanding of how things flow, even a closer relationship with nature!

    We had a message from a researcher/lecturer at Sheffield Hallam James Cherrington who is looking to talk to mountain bikers who also dig! If this is you and you are interested in helping please get in touch with James.

    I am currently recruiting participants to take part in a study around the experiences/motivations of people who build mountain bike trails in England. Specifically, I am really interested in their relationship with nature and dirt, and the tensions that exist between digging and public access.Participants would be required to take part in an informal 30-60 minute interview regarding the issues listed above, which would take place either in person (depending on location) or over the phone, and the identity of anyone involved will remain strictly confidential.As well as being published in academic publications, the contributions made by participants will also contribute to debates about mountain bike access in England, and I am fortunate to have had a great deal of interest from mountain bike advocacy groups who are keen to use this information to improve, preserve and promote access interests for mountain bikers across the country.

    To get the year off to a good start, we thought it was time to get back into our monthly trail days.

    We will be heading upto Lady Cannings from 1230 onwards to give the trails a little tlc.

    While the trails in Lady C’s are holding up pretty well at the moment, there are a couple of spots that are getting a bit of hammer and off trail excursions that we would like to get sorted to make sure things run sweetly into spring.

    We will meet at the car park at 1230 and then after that on the trails (Blue Steel and then CoG). We will provide tools, but feel free to bring extras (barrows are particularly useful).

    Snacks are provided courtesy of Shorelines but you might want to bring water with you. Also please dress appropriately for the Work.

    All help is greatly appreciated. See you Saturday!
