  • Wimble Holme Hill Dig Day Details

    The next dig day on Wimble Holme Hill will take place on Sunday Feb 3rd.  We’re meeting at Stoney Ridge car park at 10am: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=206008473308135420983.0004cfef0043aabe5a03e&msa=0

    Should be a good day as we’re adding technical interest for mountain bikers.  The Eastern Moors Partnership have bent over backwards to accomodate the MB community so wielding a shovel is a great way of repaying their exemplary attitude.

    Big Stone (http://www.bigstone.co.uk/) will once again be providing lunch and the Eastern Moors gang always bring the tea urn.

  • You gotta dig dig days man….

    Dig Day Facts:

    1.  It’s not all digging and barrowing but lots of fetching and carrying, advising, revising and honing so we get a fun ride that will last.

    2.  The doughnuts are good.

    3.  Dig days are usually at the weekend, in other words, riding time so it’s perfectly understandable that people are reluctant to give up free time to dig.  However, don’t feel you have to volunteer to work all day, even an hour is a big help.  Just stop off in the middle of your ride, flex some different muscles and then ride on.  See it as a rest….     Keep your eyes peeled for details of an upcoming dig day on Wimble Holme Hill. All being well we’ll be putting the finishing touchs to the trail as there have been a number of volunteer days involving other groups. Should be a really good day.

  • Wimble Holme Hill Gets a Makeover

    There’s nothing I like more than an energetic dig day, but sitting in the car park on Blackamoor with the wind howling like a banshee, my enthusiasm hit a low ebb.  For one delicious moment I wondered if I was going to get away with it and that no one would turn up but I was ignoring Ride Sheffield volunteers’ well known hardiness.  At the appointed hour the cars rolled up and the team assembled wearing a who’s who of outdoor clothing manufacturers kit.  When the Eastern Moors Partnership team turned up bursting with enthusiasm, I knew the game was up.     Blackamoor Reserve Advisory Group Meeting

    No, trust me, it’s much more interesting than it sounds…..

    Blackamoor is arguably home to some of the best MBing in the Peak and Ride Sheffield was well represented at the latest Reserve Advisory Group meeting with Si from http://www.18bikes.co.uk/, Henry and me in attendance.  These meetings are an opportunity for site managers Sheffield Wildlife Trust to both take soundings from those who visit and to inform them of what is coming up.  (more…)

    Ride Sheffield’s second open meeting was once again standing room only as the local mountain bike community turned out in force.  The Lescar public house is rapidly turning into one of the local scene’s spiritual homes and the big turnout was rewarded by appearances from a number of people whose decisions affect our riding on a daily basis.   • Greno Dig Day

    Yes, it’s been the worst summer since Noah shouted “Land Ahoy!” and, yes, many Peak District trails are still wetter than an otter’s pocket but there is one ray of sunshine and that, bizarrely given its reputation for sogginess, is Grenoside Woods.  Thanks to the efforts of the Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Bike Tracks trail builders and a willing band of volunteers, the Greno trails are in top condition.

    The Sheffield Moors Partnership has brought together all the bodies who manage moorland on the fringes of Sheffield.  The National Trust, RSPB, Peak District National Park Authority, Sheffield Wildlife Trust and others have joined forces to see how much they can synchronise their management policies across some of the most popular and important moorland in the country.   • Stanage Causeway Damage

     

    An endo waiting to happen….

    Careful if you’re intending to ride Stanage Causeway because a large hole has appeared, probably as a result of the recent heavy rain and, possibly, 4×4 use.  So, if you’re planning on a night ride, take care.  Andy Tickle of the Friends of the Peak District has been up for a look and reported back, “It’s not a large hole, but given its location and the likelihood it would get larger it seems sensible closing the route to vehicles. The County Council are going to repair the hole and it will remain closed for at least three months. We believe they should look at longer term solutions including a Traffic Regulation Order rather than waste more money.”
