    DSC_0173Four years ago when the Steel City track was built in Greno woods we could not have imagined how popular it would prove to be, but that popularity has brought with it a fair amount of wear and tear. So even after the repairs made by trail builders Bike Track and lots of great work done by our volunteers over the years, it has come time to give the track a bit of a facelift. (more…)

  • A National Voice For Mountain Biking

    R-SHEFFIELD-TWITTERMountain biking is becoming a complicated business and, for once, we’re not talking about the endless 26 vs 27.5 vs 29 inch debate. No, the complications arise from the fact that we are victims of our own success. Thousands of us descend on the great outdoors every weekend contributing massively to the economy but also leaving our mark on this green and pleasant land.

  • Lady Cannings – January 2015 Update

    WE DID IT! Lady Cannings trails are happening, and this is the first of a series of product updates keeping you all informed about what’s happening with the build.

    Those new to Ride Sheffield should catch up with our unique, first ever in the UK, crowd funded trail project by clicking on the “Lady Cannings” tag down there on the bottom right of the page, or at least have a read here.

    The really exciting news is that with the help of Jon Dallow at Sheffield City Council the trail plan has been steered through hoops and jumped over ropes and we have an agreed build schedule for Phase 1. Here’s the map for this phase.

  • Peak Local Access Forum Rushup Edge Meeting

    The Green Lanes sub-group of the Peak District Local Access Forum (LAF) met on 8th Jan to discuss Derbyshire County Council’s (DCC) proposed maintenance of the Rushup Edge/Chapelgate byway. In a welcome break from normal procedure, other interested parties were invited and given the opportunity to contribute to the meeting throughout. (more…)

  • Rushup Edge Site Meeting

    It is a reflection of how seriously Derbyshire County Council (DCC) now take the objections to their planned maintenance on Rushup Edge/Chapelgate that they agreed to hold a site meeting with Ride Sheffield, Peak District MTB and the Friends of the Peak District/CPRE (FoPD).  Unfortunately, that’s the end of the good news.   • Site of Special Scientific Interest Damaged By Mountain Bikers

    Normally, riders digging trails is a cause for celebration but this time it’s not good news.  Nabil Abbas of the Sheffield Wildlife Trust (SWT) contacted Ride Sheffield yesterday, (6 Jan), to let us know he’d found a group of riders digging a trail on Blackamoor. It was on land within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which makes it a criminal offence punishable in the worst cases by a £10,000 fine.   • Bolehills Dig Day #3 Saturday 13th December

If you havent been down before, it’s always a great atmosphere down there as well as the Monk Twins infamous cakes too! Even half an hour makes a big difference if that’s all you’ve got before heading out for christmas goodies! (more…)

  • Emergency Location Service 112

    Did a very wintry ride yesterday. Can’t remember being that cold for ages. Howling winds and sideways hail, but rather incredibly rode Cavedale with no dabs. Never done that before!!

    However, the bad weather up in the Peak did remind me of a service I signed up to a while ago which I think all mountain bikers should get involved with. It’s the 112 service, the international emergency number. It works from any mobile phone like 999 does in the UK, but from whatever country you’re in you’ll always get through to their emergency services.

    But, here’s the clever bit; if you text REGISTER to 112 and follow the instructions, once signed up whenever you ring 112 the emergency services can then access your phones’ GPS to locate your position. If you ring 999 or the number in whatever country you’re in they can’t do that. That is a huge step forward for safety in the hills. Be safe people. Get signed up!

  • Peak Cycle Strategy Meeting

    Ho hum, another day, another meeting, but a good ‘un!  Under the guidance of the Peak District National Park Authority, the Peak District Cycle Strategy has been taking shape over the last year or so.  It was recognised recently that mountain biking lacked a serious plan within the strategy, leading to the latest meeting of the mountain biking sub-group at Longshaw Estate.   (more…)

  • Ride Sheffield Winter Social

    The Ride Sheffield Winter Social was once again packed out and not just with sweaty mountain bikers. As has become the custom, we were lucky enough to be joined by those who manage the places we ride such as Danny Udall of the Eastern Moors Partnership (EMP), Roy Mosley of the Sheffield Wildlife Trust (SWT), Mike Rhodes from the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) and Sam Beaton from the Sheffield City Council Rights of Way Team. These are influential friends to have and thankfully, seemed to enjoy themselves! (more…)
