It’s been a busy couple of weeks since DCC started flattening yet another classic Peak District trail.  During that time, much has been achieved.  Thanks to the efforts of Peak District MTB, Ride Sheffield, @KoftheP and many others, a temporary halt has been called to the work.  However, we’re pretty sure it’s only a matter of time before another bulk order of crushed gritstone is delivered and the diggers get to work again. When it was first reported that the plantation in Burbage Valley was to be felled, some people were uneasy at the prospect of a much-loved landscape undergoing such radical change.  The rationale behind the scheme was sound, the environmental benefits obvious but meddling with one of the Peak’s finest views was always going to stir up emotions.

Usually, a new bridleway is a cause for celebration but, in this case, the question mark in the title above is well and truly warranted.  At a recent consultation and much to the surprise of nearly all Blackamoor user groups, it was revealed that a new bridleway is planned in a quiet corner of the reserve.   (more…)

Derbyshire County Council (DCC) have started work on Stanage Causeway today, (July 1st).  Their previous work has, it’s fair to say, caused some controversy amongst the mountain biking community but this time Ride Sheffield is cautiously optimistic about the outcome.   (more…)

…and so to happier news.  Not every meeting we attend leaves us in a deep depression and joining the Pennine Mountain Bike Association (PMBA) for their annual barbecue at Gisburn left us fired up and ready for action even though the midges who also attended enjoyed themselves too! (more…)

Ride Sheffield’s relationship with Derbyshire County Council (DCC) has been somewhat fractious over the years.  In an effort to create a more cooperative atmosphere, we recently met with Allison Thomas, Assistant Director for Planning and Environment and Richard Bonner, Assistant Head of Countryside Service.  The primary reason for the meeting was to impress on DCC that while we reserve the right to criticise them for some of the less sympathetic work they’ve carried out on Peak District bridleways, we’re also keen to offer alternative solutions and forge a working relationship.
