  • SHAFF this weekend!! Bike films galore….

Get yourselves down to the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival this weekend for a feast of top class bike films.  There are blockbusters like Where The Trail Ends and Strength in Numbers, shorts that are guaranteed to please all tastes such as the excellent Martyn Ashton’s Road Bike Party, Rockville, a celebration of a quirky cyclocross race in Italy and the, frankly, incredibly controversial Line of Sight, a frantic celebration of illegal road racing in the States that contains some of the most outrageously gung-ho dialogue I’ve heard since Rocky 1,2 and 3.

If you’re a climber, surfer or kayaker, then there’s more to go at including the stunning Wide Boyz celebration of Brits taking on and beating America’s toughest crack climbs, the engaging Endless Winter, an elegy to British surfing and many more.  The festival has contributed to the Ride Sheffield trail fund so put your hands in your pockets and support this growing Sheffield institution!

  • Everything you wanted to know about Crowd Sourcing Lady Canning’s

Ten days ago we launched our crowd sourcing project to raise money to build trails in Lady Canning’s Plantation. It’s an excellent site, with great soil and located on the edge of the Peak Park (half of the woods are in the national park) but is a 4 mile traffic free ride from Hunters BarGreno Woods Mini DH

Since we launched the project we have been inundated with a couple of things; primarily money! Yes you have been amazing and we have been quite overwhelmed by the support and the good feeling in the Sheffield (and beyond) MTB community, with individuals giving anything from £5 to £100! It has meant that in a short amount of time we have raised just over £2000

The other thing we have had quite a few of is questions! So hopefully we can answer a few of them here….. (more…)

  • Ride Sheffield Launch Crowd Funding Initiative for New Trails on Peak/Sheffield Border

Cy Turner has been busy and is ready to announce an exciting idea which could become a model for funding new trails all over the country.

For some years now there have been plans to build a blue/red level mountain bike circuit around Lady Cannings Plantation, a wooded area on the edge of Sheffield (location here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=428560&Y=383385&A=Y&Z=120).

The idea behind the project is to promote and encourage mountain bike use and provide some fun, intermediate level trails in the Peak. This will hopefully make getting into the sport in our area a little less intimidating as new, inexperienced riders will have an option to develop their skills before stepping up to the pretty full on rocks and gullies of the Peak itself. • Greno Dig Day

The trail construction has been slowly progressing over the past 10 months, but as the anniversary of the first diggers on the ground looms (along with a certain race in the distant future) it seems like it is time to get the trails back in tip-top condition and draining better after the harsh winter that they have had so far.

  • Wimble Holme Make-over Continues

    Wimble Holme Make-over Continues

Lots of new faces at the latest dig day but, unfortunately, the same old weather.  A brisk North Westerly breeze ensured there was only one way to keep warm and that was to push the barrow as fast as possible.  Thankfully, there was plenty of barrowing to be done and Ride Sheffield’s volunteers threw themselves into the fray with gusto.  Further wood buttressing was added to prevent the trail disappearing down the hill and the ribbon of resurfacing has now reached the point where only a couple of days hard barrowing and raking is required to see the project complete.  The Eastern Moors Partnership team from the RSPB/National Trust, Rachel, Danny and Kim, gave up another sunday to provide technical input and tea and were enormously grateful for the hard work Team RS put in.  Thanks to all those who turned up and, you never know, one day we might get to do some digging with the sun on our backs!

  • Wimble Holme Hill Dig Day Details

The next dig day on Wimble Holme Hill will take place on Sunday Feb 3rd.  We’re meeting at Stoney Ridge car park at 10am: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=206008473308135420983.0004cfef0043aabe5a03e&msa=0

Should be a good day as we’re adding technical interest for mountain bikers.  The Eastern Moors Partnership have bent over backwards to accomodate the MB community so wielding a shovel is a great way of repaying their exemplary attitude.

Big Stone (http://www.bigstone.co.uk/) will once again be providing lunch and the Eastern Moors gang always bring the tea urn.

  • You gotta dig dig days man….

    Dig Day Facts:

    1.  It’s not all digging and barrowing but lots of fetching and carrying, advising, revising and honing so we get a fun ride that will last.

    2.  The doughnuts are good.

    3.  Dig days are usually at the weekend, in other words, riding time so it’s perfectly understandable that people are reluctant to give up free time to dig.  However, don’t feel you have to volunteer to work all day, even an hour is a big help.  Just stop off in the middle of your ride, flex some different muscles and then ride on.  See it as a rest….
